Next Wednesday, October 12th, the Auditori Calรณ de s’Oli hosts the 2nd Soul Food Fest, which will once again combine the gastronomy of the southern United States with the deepest roots of blues and rock in an event organized by the City Council of Sant Josep and the Cultural Association Great River Road, with the aim of publicizing the intense link between cuisine and musical culture, and which is included in the program of the Fiestas de Cala de Bou and Port des Torrent. “We continue along with a formula that seeks to unite the gastronomic culture with the musical in a festival that brings big names from the blues and rock scene and that for this year incorporates some new features, such as the new gastronomic area,” said the Councillor for Culture and Festivals, Cristina Ribas yesterday.
The festival will start at noon, with the powerful rock and soul played by Betterman J. The critics of specialized blues magazines in the United States define Greg Izor (Vermont, 1979), as a fusion between the sand of Louisiana, the soul of Austin and the heat of Chicago. He is considered one of the most powerful and important voices in the world of blues and harmonica, and alternates the release of albums with tours, which since he moved to Madrid travel all over Europe.
Kamikase returns to Soul Food Fest
Another attraction of this year’s Soul Food Fest is the return of Kamikaze, one of the most popular rock bands of the island in the 80s and 90s. This formation arose in 1985 in a warehouse of an attic in ses Paรฏsses. Their sound evolves from heavy metal to rock and rhythm & blues. The members also change and from the initial quintet to become nine, when incorporating the brass into the formation. Currently the band is formed by four original members: Rafael Parra (vocals and harmonica), Toni Vicens (guitar), Pedro Montero (bass and backing vocals) and Josรฉ Miguel Carlos (drums and backing vocals).
The band became more popular in 1990, after winning the 3rd Estiu Jove contest in 1992. They even participated in the San Pepe Rock and the macro-concert that took place in 1992 under the slogan ‘Sรญ als espais naturals. Salvem ses salines’. During their career they shared the stage with Inmaculate Fools, Barricada, Celtas Cortos, Kiko Veneno, Manolo Garcรญa, Dinamita pa los Pollos, Bares or Rock’n’Bordes, among others, until their dissolution after the festivities of Sant Bartomeu in 1999.
For the 2nd Soul Food Fest, Kamikaze has prepared a repertoire of their original songs, like ‘Otra generaciรณn’, ‘Necesitas mรกs’, ‘Dentro de mรญ’ and ‘Como puedes ver’ with versions of their favorite songs, like ‘Peligrosa Marรญa’ by Los Sudabas, ‘Chicas de mala fe’ by Esturiรณn or ‘El tren’ by Leรฑo.
