Ses Portes tower loses part of its façade after the rains

The emblematic Ses Portes Tower, a Site of Cultural Interest dating from the sixteenth century and located at the southern tip of Ibiza to protect the salt flats and the passage of Es Freus, has lost part of its façade, apparently as a result of the recent storms.

As can be seen in the photo illustrating this news item, provided by a reader, the historic defensive structure now has a large hole after part of its wall collapsed. The stones that once formed its structure are scattered on the ground in an area that has been cordoned off for several days with plastic fencing.

A technical report drafted by an architect commissioned by the company Ibifor, owner of the tower, revealed in November last year a series of deficiencies which, the report warned, should be addressed “as soon as possible”.

At the time, the Consell de Ibiza explained that this damage assessment had already been submitted to the island’s Heritage Department, and that its conclusions “coincide with the diagnosis made of the tower”. “The technical study determines that there is no immediate risk of the tower collapsing”, the institution added.
