“Santa Eulària is scary”: attempted assault with a screwdriver and pruning shears reported near the Town Hall

“He came towards us with a very large screwdriver, about 50 centimetres long, and pruning shears”. This is how a resident of Santa Eulària describes the attempted assault he says he suffered, along with a group of friends, outside Santa Eulària Town Hall shortly after midnight on Saturday. “Are you with them? Are you with them?” the man allegedly asked while approaching them in a threatening manner. He was later arrested by the Local Police.

The incident occurred at around 12.30 am, when the group of friends arrived near the local bus stop, close to where the complainant—who has asked to remain anonymous—lives. “We stopped right in front of the shoe shop behind the Town Hall when we saw someone coming towards us from Margarita Ankermann Street”, he explains. The individual was riding a 49cc motorcycle.

As one of the friends was about to get out of the car—”just as he had his foot outside”—the man on the motorcycle approached and kicked the car door that had just been opened.

The alleged aggressor appeared to be “somewhat drunk”, and the group decided to report the incident to Local Police officers they had seen earlier behind the Town Hall. The officers launched a search for the man, who had fled in the opposite direction. However, he later returned on foot, once the officers were no longer with the group.

“He had gone around Margarita Ankermann Street—we don’t know where he may have left the motorcycle”, the witness says, adding that the man was carrying “a very large screwdriver, about 50 centimetres long, and a pair of pruning shears”.
