Many rental frauds in the Balearic Islands go unreported due to tenants’ fear of ending up on the street

Rental fraud has soared in Mallorca, to the point that three out of every five enquiries received by the Balearic consumer association Consubal are now related to this issue. Its president, Alfonso Rodríguez, laments that most of the problems reported — as in the case of substandard housing — are ultimately not taken further because tenants fear that the property could be sealed off by the authorities, leaving them “out on the street”.

Rodríguez points out that over the past year and a half, enquiries to Consubal concerning rental issues have risen sharply, now accounting for 60% of all cases received. In situations involving substandard housing — dwellings that fail to meet the habitability standards set by Balearic law, such as minimum size requirements — the organisation recommends filing a complaint with the local council, as this is considered the quickest way to address the problem.
