A total of 18 days remain before the Recinto Ferial de Ibiza closes as a vaccination centre. This was announced yesterday by the healthcare director of the Servei Balear de Salut, Eugènia Carandell, who pointed out that the closure of the mass vaccination points on all the islands is part of a new stage in the immunisation campaign in which it will “return” to the health centres. “Cities need to reclaim these spaces,” she added.
Thus, on 28 September the last vaccines will be administered at the Fairgrounds, which administed the first doses on 15th March. At the moment, the space has two of the ten vaccination lines active that had been established. Next week, however, one more will open to start administering the third doses to transplant recipients and the immunocompromised. The latter, said the director of care, are patients who are taking “special medications” (rituximab monoclonal antibodies) due to lymphoma, leukemia or chronic inflammatory diseases. Carandell explained that Infovacuna staff began yesterday afternoon to call those who should receive this booster dose, starting with transplant recipients, to give them an appointment, and has asked them not to attempt to contact the Health Department themselves. “They will be contacted”, reiterated the expert of the Conselleria, who pointed out that while people who have undergone a transplant are easily located through previous vaccination, in the case of the immunocompromised “we will have to look for them in the databases”.
Carandell assured that the Balearic Islands has enough supply to administer all the required third doses and continue vaccinating people on the islands who are still not fully vaccinated. At the moment, the Health Department is not considering extending the vaccine booster to other groups, such as those in aged care residences. “The debate is open,” says Carandell, who confirmed that the decision by the Interterritorial Council, “which are reviewing the data on the effectiveness and the need for this third dose” will be followed.
