Two near-simultaneous fires break out in Formentera

On Tuesday morning, between 12 and 13 hours, have been declared two fires in two different points of Formentera : the first, of small intensity and that has been quickly controlled and extinguished after affecting just under ten square meters of scrubland in es Camí de ses Vinyes, between the town of Sant Ferran and es Pujols and the second, of greater importance, in es Mal Pas, specifically between Paraíso de los Pinos and Can Parra, on the coast of Migjorn.

This second incident, which according to eyewitnesses could have been provoked by two outbreaks, has required the action of a team of firefighters of Formentera andntegrada by a foreman, two firefighters, two fire engines and a rapid intervention vehicle, plus three volunteers from Civil Protection who have moved to the area in two light vehicles. Two patrols of the Local Police, two patrols of the Civil Guard, a light vehicle with three agents of the Ibanat, as well as a helicopter with the Ibanat brigade of Evissa and a light aircraft amphibious also from Ibanat.

At 13.05 hours has been determined that the fire was stable, although the troops have remained in the area to complete its extinction at 13.40 hours.

Pamela Spitz, a photographer living in Formentera, has gone to the Migjorn fire and told Diario de Ibiza that “the residents have used hoses domestic to try to stop the advance of the flames while waiting for emergency teams”. In addition, it so happens that in the area there was “a water supply truck, which has allowed to reinforce the first containment tasks”. Although it is too early to know the causes of this fire, different witnesses agree in considering that it may have been arson, precisely on one of the windiest days of recent weeks, when more damage can produce an event of this type.
