The local ‘porc negre’ doubles its production in Ibiza

The porc negre pitiús breed of native pig, once extinct in Ibiza, has seen a remarkable recovery, largely due to the efforts of a farming couple in Formentera. With the establishment of the Cooperativa Ramadera Eivissenca, production has surged, particularly for the local delicacy sobrasada. In 2022, 117 pigs were slaughtered, producing 5,900 kilos of meat, and by 2023, numbers rose to 233 pigs and nearly 10,000 kilos of meat. Efforts are underway to secure official recognition for the breed, with genetic and morphological studies complete. A similar process is being pursued for the Ibizan rabbit and other native livestock.
