Incidents at Ibiza Airport: when can you be denied boarding a flight?

This Christmas, several passengers flying from Ibiza Airport were denied boarding after becoming involved in disruptive situations. These incidents have reopened the debate about the circumstances in which an airline may refuse access to a flight, as well as passengers’ rights and obligations. During the holiday period, two notable incidents required the intervention of security staff and the Guardia Civil, both linked to inappropriate behaviour in the boarding area.

The first incident occurred when a group of passengers travelling from Ibiza to Seville were removed from the boarding queue after insulting a flight attendant. The airline decided to deny them boarding on security grounds and, after the group refused to leave the area, the Guardia Civil intervened, reminding them that the decision lay solely with the airline.

The second incident involved a passenger who arrived late at the boarding gate and, after being informed that access to the aircraft was closed, assaulted a member of the cabin crew, prompting police action.
