Human remains recovered from a 40m deep cave on Ibiza

The specialists of the Guardia Civil's GREIM have had to proceed to the judicial removal of the remains due to the difficulty in accessing the area.

Specialists of the Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) have recovered remains of a human skeleton in the Avenc des Milà, a cave located in the municipality of Sant Joan.

Approval to remove the remains

According to the Peripheral Communication Office (OPC) of the armed institute, the GREIM agents descended about forty meters using caving techniques where the bones were located at the bottom of a well. The specialists of the Rescue Group carried out the generic tasks of the Judicial Police to proceed to the official removal of the remains due to the difficulty in accessing them, explained the OPC.

Once outside the cave, members of the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil of Ibiza took charge of the human remains which, according to them, could be about 30 years old. For the moment it has not been possible to determine if the skeleton belongs to a man or a woman, nor how it came to rest in the location. To try to clarify these unknowns, the OPC explains that a DNA sample has been sent to a laboratory to compare the result with databases of missing persons.
