In order to find solutions to the housing crisis in Ibiza, it is essential, among other things, to broaden perspectives and look for inspiration in other territories facing similar challenges and implementing measures that are proving effective. One example, among many, is Vail, Colorado. In this luxury ski resort in the United States, a programme called InDEED has been introduced to create “a permanent housing stock for working people by compensating those who voluntarily place deed restrictions on their properties”. Participants are offered between 15% and 20% of the appraised value of their property in exchange for deed restrictions that limit its use to local workers who must reside there for a minimum number of months per year.
The case of Vail is included in the study Reimagining Housing in Ibiza and will be discussed at the participatory talk that will open a series of conferences organised by the Pitiusan branch of the Official Association of Architects of the Balearic Islands (COAIB) on the housing crisis affecting the island.
This first event will take place this Friday, January 16, at 6 p.m. at the Centre Cultural Cervantes in Sant Antoni. It will be attended by representatives of the two organisations responsible for the report, (Ma) Laboratory for Sustainable Transformation and Business Fights Poverty. “The idea is to make the conference as interactive as possible. First, we will share the results of our work and then carry out a participatory exercise based on case studies”, explains Sofia Ribas Bamber, founder of (Ma), a social enterprise based in Ibiza that “seeks to drive a change in the island’s economic model” through social innovation, sustainability and the circular economy.
She will be one of the speakers, alongside two members of Business Fights Poverty: one of its founders, Yvette Torres-Rahman, and its Community Learning Manager, Anna Olivia Spenner Hernandez.
