Flu rate soars in Ibiza, highest in the Balearic Islands

The incidence of flu continues to rise in the Balearic Islands, with 75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants recorded in the final weeks of the year, corresponding to the period from 8 to 14 December. Ibiza is the most affected island, with a rate of 103.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants — the highest in the archipelago. It is followed by Menorca, with 75.3 cases, Mallorca with 70.8, and Formentera with 25.9.

Despite the increase in cases, the epidemic phase remains at a low intensity level, within scenario 1 of the protocol of recommendations for the control of infectious diseases, drawn up by the Ministry of Health and public health authorities from all autonomous communities. This scenario establishes preventive measures adapted to the level of incidence, including the use of face masks by people with respiratory symptoms and in particularly vulnerable or crowded environments.

Contingency flu plan

To cope with the expected increase in healthcare pressure, the Servei de Salut has activated a contingency plan that includes the availability of 215 additional hospital beds, as well as enhanced coordination between hospitals, primary care services and SAMU 061. The plan aims to guarantee healthcare capacity in the face of the seasonal rise in influenza cases and other respiratory viruses.
