Popular culture and its expression through music and dance is still alive and strongly rooted on the island of Ibiza. This could be seen yesterday at the 40th Festival de Balls, Música i Cançó Popular de la Nostra Terra, which was held at the Regio cinema in Sant Antoni, and is part of the program of the festivities of the patron saint of the town of Sant Antoni.

To celebrate this significant anniversary, the organising host from Portmany, invited Marià Serra, teacher and disseminator of traditional Ibizan culture to be the presenter and master of ceremonies.
The program of performances began with the participation of the first invited group, sa Colla de Balanzat. Next, it was the dance group Coques Bambes and the musical band Ramellets turn, both from Mallorca and performers of the well-known ball de bot of the neighboring island. On this occasion, they performed boleros, jotas and a Mallorcan fandango.
Then it was the cantadors’ turn, with the young Marc Guirado and Elena Ribas as the stars, who overcame their nerves and interpreted a successful glosa. Elena Ribas had a double role, as she also starred with Vicent Palermet in a very special dialogue with cant redoblat.
Sa Colla de Portmany closed the festival, putting an end to a meeting in which the camaraderie and warm atmosphere among the various groups was noticeable.
