Doctors advise the use of masks in healthcare centres, care homes and public transport as flu spreads

The Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians (SEMERGEN) has called for the reinforcement of preventive measures to contain the spread of influenza and other respiratory viruses. The organisation recommends the use of masks, especially in healthcare centres, care homes, crowded enclosed spaces such as public transport, and whenever symptoms of respiratory infection appear.

The society has urged health authorities to strengthen prevention and control measures. In addition, it calls for “a coordinated response with homogeneous criteria” across the national territory, warning that this is “an especially complex season”.

Common protocol

The Minister of Health, Mónica García, said on Monday that she hopes the Popular Party will put “health interests above partisan interests and confrontation” in order to move forward with the protocol for joint action against respiratory viruses, which will be voted on Wednesday by the Public Health Commission.

According to the Infections Working Group, Migrants, Vaccines and Preventive Activities (IMVAP), and SEMERGEN’s Respiratory Working Group, the unusually changeable temperatures this autumn have created “a particularly favourable scenario” for the circulation of respiratory viruses, with “a clear predominance” of subclade K of influenza virus A(H3N2).
