DJ Todd Terry says ‘anyone can be a DJ now’

Todd Terry, the Brooklyn-born DJ and producer often dubbed the ‘God of House’, reflects on his career and the current state of electronic music during his residency at Eden, Ibiza. Having first performed on the island in 1994 at Pacha, he recalls the 80s and 90s as eras of more authentic, soulful music made by real musicians, contrasting it with today’s industry, which he feels prioritises money over artistry. Critical of technology and AI’s growing role, Terry argues that modern DJs rely too heavily on cheap tools, while clubbers are distracted by their phones rather than dancing. He laments the decline of vocals, melodies, and spontaneity, stressing the need to restore soul and creativity to the scene. While impressed by Ibiza’s new hyperclub UNVRS, he questions its place on the island, emphasising instead the need to preserve Ibiza’s spirit and essence beyond commercialisation.
