DJ Luciano reflects on the musical evolution of Ibiza: “the island is undergoing a change”

Renowned DJ and producer Luciano has shared his views on the transformation of Ibiza’s music scene in an interview with Groove DJ School, comparing the present day with the years when he first began his career on the island in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“It’s very different now compared to when I first started living here”, the artist explains. “The music we were making back then was new — no one had ever heard it before. It was something completely original. At that time, clubs played progressive trance or New York house — music that came from outside, not something that truly belonged to the island”.

Luciano recalls seeing an opportunity to introduce a new sound to Ibiza and to bring a sense of freshness to its electronic scene — something that became particularly evident at DC10 and the legendary Cocoon party, two key pillars of the island’s underground movement.

However, the Swiss-Chilean DJ believes history is now repeating itself: “The same thing is happening as 25 years ago, but the difference is that this new music is becoming more commercial. I see that people are more divided, so I try to play a little bit for everyone. The most important thing is to create unity among us all”.

Luciano also points out the role of social media in this generational shift, highlighting how it has changed the way electronic music is consumed and shared.

In addition, the artist reflects on the restrictions introduced this year by local authorities in some beach clubs, describing them as “quite limiting”. Despite this, he reaffirms his affection for the island: “Ibiza will always be a special place”.
