A decade ago, diesel vehicles began their particular downward slide in sales — at times, a steep one. Their demonisation (for being more polluting than other engines) and the subsequent expiration date for their manufacture marked the beginning of their end. In 2016, up to August, 1,322 diesel cars and vans were registered in Ibiza. In the same period of 2025, only 381 have been registered — 7.7% fewer than in 2024.
A similar trend can be seen with petrol vehicles. The reason: they are being squeezed by the unstoppable rise of hybrids, whose sales are soaring this year like never before. A quick comparison illustrates this shift: between January and August 2019 (according to the latest Ibestat data), 2,728 petrol vehicles were registered in Ibiza; in 2025, that figure has fallen by 1,004 (-36.8%). Compared to 2024, registrations are down by 4.7%.
Hybrids, on the other hand, are booming, with 813 new registrations up to August — 40% more than a year ago. Electric vehicles, however, are still struggling to take off, mainly due to their high price and limited range, which fail to convince buyers. So far this year, only 137 have been registered — 61 more than last year, but similar to figures from 2023 (124) and 2021 (154).
