The Consell de Ibiza maintains that all vehicle hire with driver (VTC) licences denied in recent years are backed by studies on the island’s maximum capacity to provide this service, and that they will not be affected by the recent ruling of the Balearic Islands High Court of Justice (TSJB). The decision of the court does, however, require the resumption of the processing of 600 licence applications in Mallorca submitted by the company Moove Cars, a move against which taxi associations are preparing legal action to prevent a large-scale arrival of VTC vehicles, including in Ibiza.
As the Balearic taxi sector pointed out last week after meeting with Marga Prohens and officials from the Balearic Government’s Transport department, there are currently around 10,000 applications for VTC licences across the archipelago. Last December, the TSJB issued a ruling ordering the reprocessing of 600 licences in Mallorca that had been rejected by the previous regional government led by Francina Armengol.
Alarm in the taxi sector
This ruling does not mean that all 600 applications must be approved, but it does require that their processing be resumed. However, the taxi sector is alarmed by the possibility that the case law could have a knock-on effect and ultimately benefit the 10,000 applications that were previously halted, 3,500 of them in Mallorca and up to 6,500 in Ibiza.
