The Consell de Ibiza orders the precautionary closure of Can Dog for animal welfare breaches

The Department of Rural and Marine Environment of the Consell de Ibiza has ordered the precautionary closure of the Can Dog centre, located in the municipality of Sant Joan, following inspections carried out by the Veterinary Service and several complaints received regarding its operation.

According to the island institution, the person in charge of the centre was notified last Friday and given seven days to return all animals to their owners. In cases where this is not possible, the administration will take custody of the animals. The Consell has emphasised that no animal will be abandoned or euthanised under any circumstances.

Since June, the centre has undergone six inspections by the veterinary services, which detected multiple breaches of animal welfare and health regulations. During the most recent inspection, carried out last week, inspectors found that although there was no immediate risk to the animals’ lives, the same irregularities identified in previous visits persisted.

As a result, the Consell has decided to remove the establishment from the register of zoological centres and has adopted the following measures:

  • A ban on taking in new animals.
  • A seven-day deadline for the complete evacuation of the animals housed in the centre.

The Department of Rural and Marine Environment stresses that these actions aim to ensure the protection and welfare of animals, as well as strict compliance with current regulations on the island.
