The Prosecutor’s Office is seeking 10 years in prison for two men (each, totalling 20 years) accused of counterfeiting for allegedly introducing fake banknotes into Ibiza’s financial system “knowingly, through a drip method”. According to the accusation, they made “purchases of low-value items using counterfeit notes, allowing them to receive the change in legal tender”.
The notes were accepted due to “their apparent authenticity”, according to the indictment and the request to open oral proceedings before the Provincial Court of Palma. The trial is scheduled to take place this Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. In addition, one of the defendants faces a further five-year prison request for a drug trafficking offence.
The prosecutor’s provisional conclusions state that both men were “deprived of liberty” for these events from 30 September 2017 to 11 October of the same year. The document emphasises that “they knowingly acquired counterfeit €50 notes with the intention of putting them into circulation”. Neither defendant has a prior criminal record.
