The oncology department at Can Misses Hospital has been reduced to three specialists since 1 November, following the resignation of one of its doctors. Although there has not yet been “enough time” to feel the full impact of having one fewer oncologist, the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Ibiza and Formentera has issued a warning: “We need the oncology service to be properly staffed so that patients receive the care they deserve”, said its president, Enric Casanova.
The AECC works daily with cancer patients and promotes both prevention and research. To support these efforts, the association organises fundraising events such as the charity lunch held last Sunday in Sant Rafel to mark Breast Cancer Day.
In this context, Casanova stresses the urgency of reinforcing the specialised staff in the Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera: “It is of the utmost importance — first, to provide care for patients and, second, to ensure that prevention campaigns and screening programmes can be carried out effectively”.
Early detection of cancer
Casanova points to recent failings detected in breast cancer screening in Andalusia, which have led to incorrect or delayed diagnoses: “Screenings were carried out, but the tests were not reviewed”, he criticised.
In the case of Ibiza, he explained: “In principle, the screenings are working, but we are concerned because they only work properly if there are enough human resources”, the AECC president concluded.
