These are the 10 holidays with commercial opening in 2024 in the Balearic Islands

The timetable respects the joint proposal of the employers' associations and the trade unions

The strategy of the traditional trade associations and the trade unions has worked out well for them. After going before the Government with a joint proposal to set the calendar of authorised public holidays for 2024, the sector’s inter-island commission this morning approved the ten dates chosen by a majority, with the only opposition coming from the large supermarkets.

Approved Calendar

Next year’s commercial holidays will be on january 14 (Sunday, with the sales started)), march 28 (Holy Thursday), june 23 (Sunday and to avoid two consecutive closed holidays), august 15 (Thursday, feast of the Virgin of the Assumption), september 8 (Sunday, which is justified by the beginning of the school campaign), october 12 (Saturday, National Holiday), november 3 (Sunday after All Saints’ Day), december 6 (Friday, Constitution Day) and on december 22 and 29 (both Sundays, in the middle of the Christmas season).

This calendar was supported by all the employers’ associations of small and medium-sized businesses on the islands: Afedeco, Pimeco, Ascome (Menorca) and Pimeef (Ibiza and Formentera). They were joined by the trade unions UGT, CCOO and USO. This joint block has made it possible to achieve a sufficient majority for their proposal to be finally accepted and assumed by the Government.

Controversial exclusions

Despite this, participants in this morning’s meeting acknowledged that the meeting was “very hot” due to the radical opposition of the representatives of large companies, who among other points have been extremely critical of the fact that they have not included the january 7 (Sunday) in order to be able to start the winter sales on that day, or the december 1as the Sunday after Black Friday.
