The first day of raor fishing in Ibiza and Formentera has been marked by bad conditions at sea, with easterly winds, which have prevented the bulk of the recreational fishing fleet of the Pitiusas from going to sea.
Only eight boats left for Formentera’s traditional fishing grounds yesterday morning, according to marine reserve rangers. These few boats were concentrated in the area of Cala Saona and Punta Rasa, to the west of Formentera, where they were more or less sheltered. In the es Freus reserve, however, not a single private fishing boat has been seen, whereas in previous years there were dozens.
Catches have been scarce and the average size of the specimens has ranged between 14 and 19 centimetres. Normally, with good conditions at sea, fishing enthusiasts take advantage of the opening of the closed season to fish for this species, considered to be one of the exquisite morsels on offer in the Mediterranean and fetching astronomical prices in fishmongers.
‘Raor’ fishing enthusiasts still have until the 31st of March to catch them.
However, raor fishing enthusiasts still have until the 31st of March to catch them. The fishing limits stipulate that 50 specimens can be caught per day per individual licence and 300 units per licensed boat.
