The work of pirate taxi driver in the high season in Ibiza generates an income of between 350 and 400 euros per day that circumvents the payment of taxes. This at least is the turnover in hand that R. E. S., the creator of the platform illegal transport Ubiz claims to earn, captured on hidden camera last week by Telecinco.
A team of reporters from ‘Programa del verano’, on the island to document the proliferation of pirate taxi drivers, requested a service through one of Ubiz’s Whatsapp groups. The driver who picked them up in Platja d’en Bossa to take them to the beach of Ses Salines was R.E.S. himself, who in the conversation he had with the false passengers without knowing that he was being recorded, details that he currently manages “15 or 17” groups through this social network, with “more than 4,000″ people”.
He also confesses to “earning a lot of money”, between “350 and 400 euros a day”. Throughout the journey, he checked the private groups that warned him of the presence of the police and one of them alerted him to a drugs checkpoint at the Ses Salines roundabout. “You don’t know how much marijuana I smoked yesterday,” he says to one of the passengers, before taking an alternative route to avoid the checkpoint, which ended with another pirate taxi driver being intercepted.
