Pep Tur, Vila’s Councillor for Culture: “Ibiza Jazz 2021 is a sign that this genre is in good health”

The Ibiza Town Hall has set aside 60,000 euros for this edition, which began on Thursday with Gonzalo del Val Trio and the Big Band Ciutat d'Eivissa, according to Councillor for Culture Pep Tur

Ibiza Jazz returns with renewed energy after the 2020 edition had to be curtained due to the coronavirus. “With eight concerts over four days, this year we are close to a pre-pandemic normality of nine concerts and five performances,” said the Ibiza Town Hall Councillor for Culture, Pep Tur, hours before Gonzalo del Val Trio and the Big Band Ciutat d’Ibiza opened the festival in  Reina Sofía Park.

The budget earmaked by Vila Council for this thirty-third edition, however, is still a little short of the approximately 80,000€ in 2019. Nevertheless, the amount provided, 60,000€, exceeds that of 2020, which was around 50,000€. “Ibiza Town Hall’s intention is that next year we return to the 2019 budget to organise a more robust event,” said the Councillor for Culture. This year, for the first time, the Italian Institute of Culture, which had already collaborated with the Ibiza Town Hall in other cultural events, is involved in the jazz festival. Thanks to its support, one of the greats of the Italian jazz scene, trombonist Gianluca Petrella, will perform in Ibiza, closing the festival with his quintet on Saturday, 4th September at the Baluard de Santa Llúcia. In addition, thanks to the collaboration of the Sociedad de Artistas Intérpretes o Ejecutantes de España (AIE), through the Jazz en Ruta initiative, this year will feature the Gonzalo del Val Trio, who performed yesterday, and Alba Careta Group, who will perform tonight in Dalt Vila.

This edition retains its trademark commitment to national jazz, but also has an Italian touch, because in addition to Gianluca Petrella, another group from this country, the Michelangelo Scandroglio Quintet, will perform. This will take place today from 9.30pm onwards. There will also be another international group, one more than usual, the Focusyear Band, which will perform tomorrow on the Dalt Vila Baluard.
