The island’s tourism authorities are meeting TUI and ABTA at London’s World Travel Market to encourage overnight visits, extend stays and attract British travellers outside the peak summer season.

The Formentera Island Council is looking to attract more British tourists who stay overnight on the island, rather than limiting their visit to a day trip. This is one of the key objectives of the island’s delegation at this year’s World Travel Market (WTM) in London, which began its programme of meetings with travel industry professionals on Tuesday.

Among those taking part are representatives of TUI, one of Europe’s leading tourism groups, and ABTA, the UK’s association of travel agents and tour operators.

The Formentera delegation is led by Island Council president Óscar Portas, tourism councillor Artal Mayans and island tourism director Leonardo Metastasio. Working alongside the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB), they are using the meetings to assess the outlook for the British travel market and explore new opportunities to promote the island.

Figures from the Formentera Observatory show why attracting overnight visitors has become a priority. During the 2026 tourist season, almost 42% of enquiries from British visitors at the island’s tourist information offices came from people staying for just one day, among enquiries where the type of visit was recorded.

That figure is significantly higher than the 27% recorded across all visitor enquiries.

Formentera wants British visitors to stay longer

In response, the Island Council wants to promote a broader tourism offer that goes beyond the traditional sun-and-beach holiday. Its focus includes nature, outdoor activities, gastronomy and culture, highlighting experiences that could encourage visitors to spend more time on the island.

“We want British visitors to discover that Formentera offers far more than a one-day trip for sun and beach,” said tourism councillor Artal Mayans, who believes the UK market has considerable potential.

The aim is to encourage longer stays and attract visitors outside the busiest months of the tourist season, helping to spread tourism activity more evenly throughout the year.

‘Memories by the Sea’ puts Formentera’s night sky in the spotlight

The delegation’s programme continues on Wednesday, 4 November, with the presentation of Memories by the Sea, scheduled for 11 am local time at the Balearic Islands stand.

The initiative aims to showcase Formentera through the experiences and memories visitors take home with them, with particular emphasis on astrotourism and the opportunities offered by the island’s night sky.

The presentation will be one of the main events in Formentera’s participation at the London travel fair, which runs until Thursday, 5 November.
