The project includes planting 40 new trees to restore the double row of trees along Portmany Avenue.

Sant Antoni Town Hall has begun work this week to restore the trees at ses Alameres, along Portmany Avenue, in a project worth €66,058, including VAT, that will see 40 new Platanus hispanica trees planted. The initiative aims to gradually replace some of the trees that have disappeared over the decades from this historic tree-lined avenue, a defining feature of the main entrance to the town.

Ses Alameres currently has around 100 trees. The project seeks to recover part of the lost tree cover and safeguard the area’s natural and landscape heritage, according to the local government led by Marcos Serra of the Popular Party (PP).

Work has started on the section closest to the town centre, where six new trees have already been planted. This initial phase is part of a wider scheme that involves preparing 40 planting pits to accommodate new trees in the spaces left vacant by the original specimens.

Ses Alameres: a historic landmark at the entrance to Sant Antoni

Ses Alameres is a distinctive feature of Sant Antoni’s landscape and history, the town council says. Dating back to the construction of the road in the 19th century, the rows of trees “reflect the way access routes to towns were laid out” at the time, marking the transition between the surrounding countryside and urban settlements.

Over the years, they have become one of the most recognisable sights at the entrance to the town.

Beyond their historical importance, ses Alameres also serve an environmental and landscape function. According to the town council, the double row of trees provides shade and helps improve air quality, contributing to the urban environment.

Restoration forms part of Sant Antoni’s Nature Restoration Plan

The project is part of Sant Antoni’s Nature Restoration Plan, under the programme’s urban ecosystems category.

Work will progress along Portmany Avenue, with the aim of replacing missing trees and gradually restoring this distinctive green corridor.

The initiative is intended to preserve ses Alameres as both a natural asset and a historic feature of Sant Antoni, maintaining an important part of the town’s identity for residents and visitors alike.
