Recovery crews have begun removing vehicles stranded by Storm Adam after heavy rain flooded a car park in Santa Eulària, as the Balearic government activated a red weather alert across Ibiza and Formentera.

Heavy rain has turned an unpaved car park in Es Canar, Santa Eulària, into a major problem for the owners of around 40 vehicles. Torrential downpours brought by Storm Adam flooded the site, with water reaching bonnet height in some cars. Recovery teams are now using tow trucks to retrieve the stranded vehicles.

Grúas y Rescates Contreras, the company responsible for the recovery operation, removed five vehicles on Monday and plans to continue the work on Tuesday.

“We’re going back today for two more cars we had to leave behind yesterday, along with any new jobs that come in,” the company said. It estimates that around 40 vehicles have been affected at the car park.

The team expects to begin removing vehicles at 10 am, starting with the two cars left behind before dealing with any additional recovery requests. The overall number of affected vehicles does not mean they have all suffered the same level of damage, and the extent of the damage has yet to be established.

Five Vehicles Recovered from the Floodwater

The recovery operation began after heavy rainfall left the car park submerged. Numerous vehicles were trapped by the rising water, making the site one of the most striking scenes of the storm as it swept through the municipality of Santa Eulària.

The recovery company has experience dealing with this type of emergency. It says it took part in vehicle recovery operations during the Valencia floods and also responded to flooding in Ibiza last year.

Two Days of Flooding Across Ibiza and Formentera

Persistent rainfall over the past 48 hours has caused flooding in streets, commercial premises, basements and car parks across Ibiza and Formentera.

The severity of the weather prompted the Balearic government to maintain a red alert for rain and thunderstorms. Civil Protection also sent ES-Alert emergency notifications to mobile phones on both islands on two consecutive days, warning residents and visitors about the dangerous conditions.
