Return to the devastating Platja d’en Bossa fire: signs of hope amid the destruction

On June 10, 2025, a devastating fire destroyed three commercial premises in Platja d’en Bossa, left another seriously damaged and forced the evacuation of dozens of people from the Bossamar building, which narrowly escaped being reduced to ashes. Seven months later, the scene remains bleak in this block between Sa Pobla and Carreres streets, now within the municipality of Sant Josep, close to the seafront and the Ushuaïa discotheque hotel, which was also slightly affected by the flames.

Walking around the ground zero of the fire still feels like visiting an old war zone. It is still possible to enter the three completely destroyed premises without much difficulty, as a young man knows well. Wearing a reflective vest and keeping close to his bicycle to prevent it from being stolen, he was sleeping on the floor on Tuesday morning inside the former Sa Sal restaurant, where the fire started. The blaze was allegedly caused by a man and a woman who remain in custody.

Alberto Yagüe, the owner of the restaurant, which had been open for barely a year when it was destroyed by the fire, explains to Diario de Ibiza that “the loss has been very significant” and that the “passing of the months” has helped him gradually come to terms with its magnitude. However, this has not diminished his determination to rebuild the business from its current ruins. “Our intention is to continue. In fact, we are already requesting quotes from several construction companies because we have commissioned a reconstruction project that is now complete. So yes, the idea is to carry on”, he reiterates.
