The feat of two swimmers in Ibiza enters the Guinness Book of Records: “The high waves, the current and the dizziness took their toll on us”

Ibiza has once again earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records. German swimmer Nathalie Pohl and Scottish-Australian Andy Donaldson achieved on 3 October a never-before-seen feat: circumnavigating the island of Ibiza in a relay swim. A total of 104.5 kilometres—measured linearly around the island’s perimeter—completed in 30 hours, 57 minutes and 49 seconds.

The challenge, officially certified as a record by the Marathon Swimming Federation, began at 7 am on 3 October from ses Figueretes and finished about 14 hours later the next day on Talamanca beach. Alberto Cerdán, an accomplished swimmer and organiser of the event—along with other major sports competitions in Ibiza such as Oceanman and IbizaOWS through his brand Swim Wanderer—shared some details of the feat with Diario de Ibiza: “At first, the race was scheduled for 30 September, but due to the flooding caused by the ‘dana’, we had to postpone it by three days”.

Organising the event required extensive preparation, involving “around six months of planning”, according to the team. They had to study the route in detail and anticipate potential challenges arising from the island’s coastal orography, currents and weather conditions.
