A 100 people have suffered a stroke in Ibiza and Formentera so far this year

A hundred people have suffered a stroke in Ibiza and Formentera so far this year, according to data provided by the Balearic Ministry of Health on the occasion of World Stroke Day, which will be commemorated tomorrow. The Pityusic Islands accounted for 14% of all stroke cases attended by SAMU 061 between January and September this year in the Balearic Islands, according to a comparative report prepared by the emergency service. Of these, 13% were recorded in Ibiza and 1% in Formentera, while 79% occurred in Mallorca and 7% in Menorca.

The study reveals that the number of cases treated across the Balearic Islands has increased by 23% compared to the same period last year. In 2025, 767 stroke alerts were activated — 143 more than the 624 registered in 2024. This increase, the service explains, is linked both to the ageing of the population and to improvements in early detection and healthcare coordination.

To mark World Stroke Day, SAMU 061 highlights that rapid and coordinated action can significantly reduce mortality and the long-term effects of this disease. The motto “time is brain” sums up the importance of intervening within the first few minutes to limit neurological damage.
