Three key ’Ndrangheta mafia members arrested in Ibiza

Agents of the National Police and the ROS-Roma dei Arma dei Carabinieri unit, from Italy, arrested last Friday in Ibiza three people for their alleged participation in the crimes of drug trafficking and belonging to a criminal organization. The arrests were made on the basis of European arrest warrants (OEDE) issued by the Italian authorities and executed by the Central Court of Instruction Number One of the National High Court, through the territorially competent court, the Court of Instruction Number Two of Ibiza, reports the National Police in a statement. In addition, the agents carried out two house searches, one in Ibiza and the other in Barcelona, within the same operation.

“Since 2024 and within the framework of the investigation work of the General Information Commissariat of the National Police, which investigates the activities and penetration in the economic, political and social fabric of transnational criminal groups that threaten the internal security of our country, the implementation of the ‘Ndrangheta has been monitored”, highlights the police. Precisely, as a result of these investigations, “the agents detected possible members of this criminal organization in national territory and, after several investigative tasks together with international cooperation, in which Euro Just has been key, it was possible to identify three important members of this organization”, who at that time were in Ibiza.

Rapid arrest thanks to international collaboration

Thanks to the international collaboration of the National Police and the Italian police unit ROS-Roma, dei Arma dei Carabinieri, the rapid arrest of these important members of the mafia was achieved. “The fluid exchange of information has proved essential for their location,” insists the Spanish body.

Thus, during the morning of last Friday, August 15, a public holiday, “the agents deployed a police device in Ibiza that concluded with the arrest of three people”. In addition, two house searches were carried out, one in Ibiza and the other in Barcelona, in which the agents seized 35,000 euros in cash, high-value jewelry -such as two watches, one of them valued at 120,000 euros-, false identity documents, narcotic substances, mobile devices and documentation of interest, effects that are now being analyzed by the agents.

The operation was high risk, emphasize from the National Police, “due to the high degree of danger of the detainees and their resistance to arrest.”

The three detainees have been placed at the disposal of the holder of the Central Court of Instruction Number One, who has decreed their imprisonment.

The investigation has been carried out jointly by the General Information Police Station, the Fugitive Group and the Transnational Criminal Organizations Group of the General Police Station of the Judicial Police. It has also counted on the collaboration of the Information and Judicial Brigades of Ibiza and Barcelona, as well as the intervention of tactical teams of the GEO and GOES.

‘Ndrangheta, international criminal organization

“The ‘Ndrangheta, with more than 150 years of existence, has consolidated itself as one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world, showing an enormous capacity to influence the politics, economy and security of the countries in which it is based. Unlike other Italian mafias, such as the Sicilian Cosa Nostra or the Neapolitan Camorra, the ‘Ndrangheta has maintained a highly hermetic structure based on discretion and family ties, which has made it difficult to carry out major police operations against its different structures. This organization has set its sights on Spain as one of the key points for its expansion due to the strategic geographical location of our country,” explains the Police in the note, to make clear the importance of these arrests.

“Its influence extends beyond the Italian borders, with an active presence in Europe, America, Africa and Asia. The combination of violence, territorial control and financial sophistication makes this organization a potentially destabilizing threat for States, especially those that have the ideal conditions for organizations of this type to thrive, either because of their geographical and cultural proximity, language facility and comfortable unnoticed, as is the case of Spain”, they conclude.
