A yacht is currently berthed at the Levante dock of the port of Ibiza, which goes unnoticed by the citizens , the ‘Foners’, which is not as large or as luxurious as its neighbors, and is also considerably older.
But that vessel had a name and an owner known to all Spaniards. It was the ‘Fortuna’, the boat with which King Juan Carlos I sailed for years when he wore the crown. He stopped enjoying it in 2014, a month before he abdicated the throne in favor of his son Felipe.
At that time, the ‘Fortuna’ passed into the hands of the Tourism and Cultural Foundation of the Balearic Islands (Fundatur), which gave it to Juan Carlos in 2000. He finally sold it to Baleària for 2.2 million euros (when it had cost them 18 million), which refurbished it and changed its name to ‘Foners’.
Nobody wants it
The ship was built by Izar in the shipyards of San Fernando (Cadiz). It is 41.5 meters long and has four cabins that can comfortably accommodate eight people.
In 2018 Baleària decided to sell the ‘Foners’. The starting price was 8 million euros, and despite being offered as “the fastest yacht in the world” (it has three Rolls-Royce turbines that allow it to reach 130 kilometers per hour or 70 knots), no one wanted it. So in 2019 the company cut the price in half. But no interested buyer appeared either.
According to experts, the reasons why the ‘Foners’ was not sold are several, but basically it is that it has a fuel consumption far above the rest of the boats in the same range because of those engines.
In 2021 Baleària, interested in recovering the investment, puts it up for sale for 2.2 million euros. The boat has passed through such important sales agencies as Yacht Habour, Superyatchs or Royal Yacht Brokers. However, neither its renewed appearance, nor its luxurious past, nor the hype that always surrounds everything that has to do with the emeritus have managed to be an eye-catching aspect for potential buyers to approach it.
This is the story of a wedding in Ibiza in which the bride does not appear and a luxury yacht that costs 650,000 euros a week Docks in Ibiza the superyacht ‘Loon’, which is rented for more than 500,000 euros a week and belongs to this American billionaire
In 2023 the ‘Foners’ was still waiting for a new owner, and now it is in Ibiza. Maybe showing it in the island of luxury par excellence someone will take a fancy to it and decide to buy it.
