“We regret to report a traffic accident involving a head-on collision between two vehicles with a tragic toll: 2 people dead and 3 injured. We send our condolences to the families and friends of those affected. 18:30 hours. EI-781 @detalaia”.
This is the publication in X (formerly Twitter) that the Fire Station of Ibiza has published in its social network today, January 28, 2025 at eight o’clock in the morning. A few hours later, after clarifying what happened, the tweet has been removed. Firefighters took this information from the application of the Emergency Service112 and corroborated the data with a call to the Emergency Center, as explained from the Island Park to es Diari. In addition, in deference to the families, the information was not released until the next day and the images of the accident were not made public.
The social networks of the emergency services are an official source of events that take place in Ibiza and from their publications we journalists obtain information.
This morning, as soon as the journalists of Diario de Ibiza saw that tweet, the machinery was set in motion to obtain more data and details of that tragic event. Calls first thing in the morning to the Local Police of Sant Josep, the Guardia Civil, 061, the Hospital Can Misses, the Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario…
A new call from this newspaper to the Ibiza Fire Department, after reading the tweet, confirmed the data of that publication in X that there were two dead in the accident, the two drivers of the head-on collision that took place yesterday afternoon. The 061 informed this newspaper that there were injured in the accident, but said they did not know if the two most seriously injured had finally died in hospital. For its part, the Guardia Civil, said: “Apparently, the two victims of the accident died in the hospitalbut we are unable to say for lack of information. In this accident, one was seriously injured, two were slightly injured and two were unharmed”.
Times in journalism, and more so in events, are fast, but in spite of this, information is contrasted by all the means at our disposal.
An official source
The tweet from the Ibiza Fire Department was so clear and forceful, where even condolences were given to the families and friends of the deceased, that there was little doubt that, unfortunately, we were facing the first fatal accident on our roads in 2025. On the other hand, whenever the Island Park has published information of any event in their social networks, it has been truthful information. In the case of yesterday’s accident, there was no doubt about it either, since it was official information.
Finally, it was the Hospital Can Misses which finally denied the news that in the traffic accident there had been two deaths and confirmed five injured, one of them in the ICU of the public hospital (a 66 year old woman of German nationality) who is stable within the gravity and four others have been referred to the Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario and are not serious.
At 10.23 this morning, the Ibiza Firefighters published a new tweet in which they apologize for the mistake made and attributed it to “an error in communication during the intervention in the accident”.
