Posidonia, the mistreated heritage of Ibiza and Formentera

The inclusion of Posidonia oceanica, a vital seagrass species, in Ibiza’s successful bid for UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999 emerged from a collaboration between educator and deputy mayor Pepita Costa and marine biologist Manu San Félix. Initially overlooked, Posidonia’s ecological significance as a natural heritage was pivotal in redefining the island’s nomination, despite early resistance from conservation authorities. While its inclusion elevated awareness and recognition of its importance, the health of these meadows has deteriorated significantly due to water pollution, climate change, and anchor damage from boats. San Félix highlights the urgency of protective measures to prevent irreversible loss, advocating for stricter conservation efforts as Ibiza’s environment faces mounting challenges.
