Airport closes October with fourth drop in air traffic of the year

Ibiza airport closed last October, in theory the last one that can be considered within the tourist season, with a 0.6% decrease in passenger traffic. This means that in that period the terminal handled a total of 848,788 users, according to data from Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA).

This is the fourth time this year that the number of passengers at es Codolar has fallen, although the losses are not very significant compared to the increases in activity recorded in the peak summer months.

The year began strongly at the terminal, with growth of 2.4% and 10.2% in the movement of users in January and February. In March, the inertia of growth continued, albeit with a slight 1.2%, while April saw the first blip with a 4% drop in passenger numbers compared to the same month in 2023.

After this first slowdown, the summer began to accelerate with an increase in activity at es Codolar of 6.2% in May, the first month of the season and, by extension, the first with a significant volume of visitors. In any case, June fell by a slight 0.2% and June and August returned to the path of growth, albeit discreetly: 3.1% and 2%, respectively (these increases in these months are nevertheless significant due to their importance for tourism). Finally, September closed with a 0.2% drop in the number of air travelers to Ibiza.

With these figures, and taking into account that the accumulated total for the year at the airport, already counting October, amounts to 8,577,778 passengers (which implies a growth of 1.4% with respect to the same period in 2023), it is very likely that the year will be an all-time record, surpassing for the first time the nine million passenger mark.

November and December have yet to be counted. And if last year’s figures are maintained: 237,882 and 235,357 passengers, the nine million mark will be slightly exceeded.

Back to last month, the data provided by AENA indicate that most of the passengers, as happens every month, “flew on commercial connections, specifically 847,591”.

Of these, 308,316 came from or were destined for domestic airports (data includes arrivals and departures), which represents a 3% decrease with respect to the same month last year. International passengers numbered 539,275, up 0.8% year-on-year.

By markets, according to AENA, the main markets for air traffic in Ibiza are the United Kingdom, with 187,126 passengers, Germany, with 96,207, Italy (72,520) and the Netherlands (61,985 passengers).

As for operations, the only runway enabled for landings and takeoffs in Ibiza added 7,577 flights in October, a figure that “has remained the same” as in the same month last year.

In addition, 77,314 aircraft movements were handled in this period, 0.1% less than from January to October 2023.
