A total of 118 residents from the municipality of Eivissa will participate in the awarding process of the 48 urban gardens in the public estate of Can Tomeu offered by the City Council. The tender will initially be held in mid-February in view of the registered demand. The Consistory has rejected twelve other applications for failing to comply with the conditions, although these people have the option to resubmit within ten days.
Initially, Vila was going to reserve six of these urban garden plots for social welfare associations, however, in the end only the Multiple Sclerosis Association of Eivissa and Formentera has applied. 3,806 square meters of municipal land is reserved for the plots, which are surrounded by a fence. In total, 48 individual plots of between 30 and 50 square meters are offered for cultivation.
In addition, the project includes another plot of 345 square meters that will be used for organic farming workshops. Users will have a common area at their disposal, with a rest area, picnic tables, awnings, two bathrooms and a storage area, as well as a section for composting and waste treatment.
Products such as herbicides and pesticides are forbidden
The urban garden plots will be distributed by age brackets, with one group for people between 18 and 40 years old, another from 41 to 64 and the last for people over 65 years old. Each of the plots are granted for a period of two years for private use, practicing traditional and organic agriculture.
