Ibiza is suffering traffic jams, flooding, and overflowing sewers as a result of the storm

The storm dumped nearly 100 liters of water per square meter, wreaking havoc in Vila and other parts of the island. Sant Antoni, the municipality in Ibiza hit the hardest by a storm that reached 52,3 liters per square meter in one hour

The storm, which began in the early hours of yesterday and continued throughout the day, produced many flooding incidents, saturated the city of Ibiza‘s sewer system, caused traffic jams and road closures, and generated chaos in several regions of the island.

The right lane of the Sant Antoni motorway in the direction of Ibiza was flooded between PK 5 and PK 7, while at Cala de Bou, the avenue of es Caló had to be closed between Granada and Castelló. It was not the only road in Sant Josep that was affected: on the airport motorway, there were cuts at Can Fonoll, traffic was diverted to the upper branch in both directions at the ses Salines roundabout, and on Cam de es Vedrà I es Vedranell, in es Cubells, there were small landslides that filled the road with stones and earth.

Landslides also occurred in Santa Eulària, on the Cala Llonga road. Additionally, a seven-metre-long boat was left stranded on the beach of es Canar when it broke free from its anchoring place, according to Town Hall records.

Collapse in Ibiza municipality

Vila’s central business district crumbled as a result of the volume of water that dropped, eliciting concerns from pedestrians and cars who denounced the situation on social media. Users on Twitter compared the situation, which occurs every time it rains more than usual, to a “biblical scene”; the streets of Ibiza to “urban lakes,” and decried the insufficient capacity of “the pipes that drain the water.”
