Did Spain win the 2010 World Cup thanks to a crazy night on Ibiza by some of the national team players?

Cesc Fàgregas reveals in a documentary what happened on Ibiza before leaving for South Africa and finally winning the Football World Cup.

The Spanish national football team made history in 2010 by winning the World Cup in South Africa. It was the first time in its history to achieve this milestone.

Now, one of the protagonists of that triumph, Cesc Fàbregas, has publicly told an anecdote that took place on Ibiza that for some of his teammates and himself was decisive in that victory: “We always joke among us saying that Ibiza was a very important step to win the World Cup“, says the footballer in a documentary that is now available on DAZN: ‘Cesc Fàbregas: the last dream’.

The world champion says that the most important moment in the history of his career was when he lifted the World Cup in South Africa. The midfielder was also the one who gave the pass to Andrés Iniesta to score the goal that gave Spain the victory in the final against the Netherlands.

But before achieving the great feat in South Africa, Cesc Fàbregas starred in a funny moment with several players of the National Team, including Gerard Piqué and Carles Puyol, his two great friends at the time.

What went down before the World Cup?

“Before the World Cup in South Africa we played a match in Andalusia, I can’t remember where now. What we used to do before a big event was play a friendly and then the coach gave us two days off to say goodbye to the family and then go back. We came back, I was still very young, I was alone, Geri was alone, Puyi I think was also alone at that time and we arrived in Barcelona, we left everyone behind. There were seven or eight players and we said to the captain of the plane: ‘Now could you take us to Ibiza for a moment to party one night and then we can go home?,” he said in the DAZN documentary.

“It would be 1am already, and the captain said yes, he could take us there and then come back. We went to Ibiza, had a crazy night between the three of us at Pacha, a little partying and at 9 or 10 in the morning we took a flight to Barcelona, Ryanair or some similar company: slept all day, said goodbye to the families the next day and returned to Madrid to go to South Africa. But between us we always joke that Ibiza was a very important step to winning the World Cup”.
