A total of 45 teachers are taking part in the latest Service-Learning programme, which aims to connect students with Ibiza’s World Heritage and will culminate in May with the public presentation of projects developed by pupils.

Forty-five teachers from five schools in Ibiza took part on Tuesday in the first session of the island’s Ibiza World Heritage Service-Learning programme. Organised by the Ibiza Teacher Training Centre (CEP) in collaboration with the Ibiza Island Council (Consell d’Eivissa), the initiative aims to bring the island’s heritage into the classroom and encourage students to develop educational projects linked to its historic and cultural sites.

The schools participating in this edition are CEIP Cervantes, CEIP Sa Bodega, IES Quartó del Rei, IES Sa Blanca Dona and IES Algarb. Their teachers attended the opening session at the CEP facilities, which combined theoretical training with a visit to one of the island’s heritage sites.

Salvador Ruiz, director of the Ibiza Teacher Training Centre, welcomed participants and highlighted the important role teachers play in preserving the value of local heritage and passing it on to younger generations.

Geographer and Service-Learning specialist Carmen Frau then delivered a presentation explaining the principles of this educational approach and the contribution it can make to society.

Following the training session, teachers took a guided tour of the Sa Capelleta Interpretation Centre, led by archaeologist Belén Garijo.

The visit gave participants an opportunity to learn more about the centre’s facilities and explore the richness of the heritage assets it houses.

The programme aims to help participating schools develop educational projects connected to Ibiza’s World Heritage. It follows a Service-Learning (ApS) approach, combining classroom learning with practical activities designed to benefit the wider community.

The students’ projects will be presented to the public at a closing event scheduled for May.

An educational programme running since 2022

The Ibiza Teacher Training Centre has been organising the island’s Service-Learning programme since 2022, with the aim of encouraging schools to adopt this educational approach.

The previous edition brought together 350 students at the Caló de s’Oli auditorium for the closing event held last June.

With this latest edition, the Teacher Training Centre and the Ibiza Island Council are continuing an initiative designed to strengthen younger generations’ understanding of, appreciation for and connection with Ibiza’s heritage.
