What will winter be like in the Balearic Islands? This is what the Aemet says

The autumn that is about to end has been characterised this year in the Balearic Islands for being a very warm period, even registering record high temperatures during the month of December. In fact, it has been the fourth warmest autumn since records have been kept, as confirmed this morning by the delegate of the State Meteorological Agency in the Balearic Islands (Aemet), María José Guerrero.

During the last three months the temperature average was 20.1 degrees. This temperature is 1.6 grams above normal values during the autumn stage.

Guerrero has detailed that every autumn months have been very warm. Thus, the average temperature in September was 23.4 degrees; in October it was 21.1 and in November it was 15.9 degrees. In the first half of December the average temperature was 13.4 degrees.

October, the warmest month

In terms of anomaly, the warmest month of this fall was October. In fact, it was the second warmest October since temperature records have been kept.

It is proving to be a very warm season, as in some cases the temperature has exceeded 30 degrees Celsius in all the islands. Thus, for example, on October 1 in the town of Porreres it reached 33 degrees, unusual for these dates.

Likewise, during this month of December it has been possible to reach records of maximum temperatures, especially in the town of Palma and Capdepera, which recorded up to 26 degrees.

Nighttime temperatures were also particularly high. In fact, several tropical nights were recorded on the islands, with more than 20 degrees. Particularly in Palma, where records were broken with up to 36 nights with higher than normal temperatures. In contrast, the coldest days were recorded at the end of November, dropping, for example, to 1.6 degrees in the town of Campos.

The third driest autumn

In terms of rainfall, the Balearic Islands delegate of the Aemet this autumn as the third driest since records have been kept. During these three months it has not snowed a single day, when it often does for a few days. The most remarkable was the cap de fibló, with gusts above 105 kilometers per hour, which was detected between Campos and Llucmajor.

In this season, which is about to end, it has rained 54% less than normal. Thus, if the average is that it rains about 220 liters per square meter, this fall has barely reached 101 liters.

Thus, September was normal, October was dry, November was very dry and the first half of December has followed the same constant. The locality where the dryness has been most noticeable has been in Sant Joan de Labritja, in Eivissa, with 1.2 liters of water per square meter.

But despite being a very dry period there has been some very heavy rainfall, such as the one suffered by the town of Son Servera, where more than 110 liters of rain per square meter fell.

Guerrero describes the autumn season as windy. Thus, at the airport of Palma there have been registered 14 days of strong wind, which is somewhat higher than usual. The strongest gusts were recorded on November 2 with 119 kilometers per hour in the west of Cabrera and 113 kilometers in the Serra de Alfabia.

The weather is not going to change much in the winter season, which starts next Friday and will last until March 20. The predictions of meteorologists are that the most probable forecast is that the following will be registered slightly higher than normal temperatures and precipitation amounts to be as usual.

The usual temperature during the winter in Mallorca is around 11 degrees Celsius. However, this coming season it will be a little warmer than usual. En january will lower the thermometer somewhat with respect to the current temperature. However, as these months pass, the weather will improve and the temperatures will rise.
