Uber’s arrival in Ibiza: Government prepares new VTC regulations

Taxi drivers oppose the removal of the 30-minute pre-booking time limit in future legislation

The Eivissa Island taxi federation (Fitie) and other Balearic Islands taxi groups are strongly opposing the government’s plan to remove the 30-minute pre-booking requirement for Vehicle Transport with Driver (VTC) services.

This opposition comes amid regulatory changes proposed by the Ministry of Housing, Territory and Mobility, aiming to align with state and European court decisions. The taxi sector argues there’s no legal basis for such a change, contrasting with the Ministry’s reference to court rulings that nullified similar restrictions in the Basque Country and the EU.

Meanwhile, the Eivissa Town Hall is preparing for new taxi driver license exams, amidst close scrutiny by local taxi associations on the entry of services like Uber into the market.
