The change of office has been good for most of the politicians of the Pitiusas. At least for their bank accounts. In the last three years, the vast majority of politicians have seen an increase in their salaries. Some of these increases are considerable, according to data extracted from the transparency portal of the website newtral.es, which collects the remuneration data of public officials throughout Spain.
This is the case for the socialist deputy SofÃa Hernanz, who leads the ranking for the juiciest increases in the salaries for politicians of the Pitiusas: 21.8%. At the end of the last legislature, Hernanz received about one hundred thousand euros gross per year (96,748.26), almost 7,000 per month, between allowances and supplements.
Right now, the salary of the historic PSOE deputy is 117,833.8 euros gross per year, almost 8,500 each month, of which 1,959.62 euros correspond to the allowances she receives for being from outside Madrid and another 3,406.46 for supplements. An increase that is due to the fact that in this mandate she holds more positions than in the previous one. She is second secretary of the Congress and of the Bureau of the Congress, besides being assigned to several commissions. Hence the increase.
If in 2019 Hernanz earned considerably more than the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, at the moment the difference is even greater, given that her salary (84,845.6) has barely increased by 2.24%. Hernanz is among the fifteen representatives in Congress with the highest salary, a list headed by the president of the House, Meritxell Batet, with 230,930 euros per year, details the portal.
Politician’s salaries on the rise
The second politician of the Pitiusas whose salary has increased the most in this time is the mayor of Ibiza, Rafa Ruiz, who between 2019 and 2022 has experienced a rise of 16.47%, according to the portal’s data: from 51,117.64 euros gross per year (3,651.26 per month) to 59,539.7 (4,252.84). This makes him the highest paid mayor of the island, a position that in the last year of office was held by the then mayor of Santa Eulà ria and now president of the Consell de Ibiza, Vicent MarÃ. There are about fifteen mayors in Spain who earn more or less the same as Ruiz, including those of Soria, León, Córdoba or Palma, José Hila, who earns about 500 euros more than Ruiz per year. According to the portal, Ibiza’s mayor is one of the 100 best paid in the country, a list headed by Madrid’s José Luis MartÃnez-Almeida (113,960 euros gross per year), followed by Bilbao’s Juan MarÃa Aburto Rique (107,793) and Barcelona’s Ada Colau Ballano (100,000).
