Whoever in a few years time wants to know about Balearic education in these times, will have to study in detail the role of Martí March. The Minister of Education has been at the head of the Govern department for seven years and has even had time to face a pandemic without stopping classes.
That is why today he calmly and diligently faces a turbulent school year, full of changes at all levels and, it must be mentioned, also overshadowed by some controversy in recent weeks. Sitting in his office at the Conselleria, he describes the main aspects of the return to the classrooms, with more than 170,000 students ready for the return to routine.
New curricula, Lomloe, Balearic Education Law … there are many changes. Will it be an uncertain school year?
I don’t think so. In education there are no ruptures, but continuity with changes. And I understand that changes always produce some uncertainty and fear, but we have a teaching staff that has years of experience. We have trained teachers and management teams, and there will be a whole process of accompaniment. In addition, many changes were already being implemented in the pre-school and elementary schools.
Will the Regional Ministry be lax this year when applying the new curricula?
It will be flexible as far as possible, but it is clear that the curricula have to be applied as the Lomloe says. I regret that there are parliamentary groups that call themselves constitutionalists and then doubt that an organic law has to be applied.
Teachers, centers and unions asked for more time to prepare.
We would also have liked to have more time to apply it, but we cannot play the anti-system, we have to follow the law like the rest of the communities. There are about eight autonomous regions of different political parties that have not yet published the curricula…we did it at the beginning of August.
Is there anything left of the pandemic in the classrooms beyond the hydroalcoholic gel?
We have learned a lot from the pandemic, and the first thing is that without presence there is no education. This is the first course without restrictions, but some things came with covid that are here to stay. HEPA filters, hand hygiene… some centers will apply organizational measures because they worked during the pandemic, such as staggered entry or splitting. As a result of the health crisis we have also intensified the resources for the mental health of students.
