Govern refuses to set dates for opening Ibiza’s nightclubs

The group Ocio de Ibiza (Leisure Ibiza) expects the industry to reopen in October

Next week, the Balearic Govern will meet with representatives of the association Ocio de Ibiza, which includes some of the main nightclubs on the island, to address the conditions under which the sector should restart its activity. The Balearic Govern’s spokesperson, Iago Negueruela, said several times yesterday that this meeting will not set any date on the possible reopening of these entertainment venues. “The meeting is to see how it should be done, not to set dates, given the level of knowledge we have of the disease and what the experts say,” said Negueruela, who noted that this sector must adopt “specific measures”.

Just as in late July, at the height of covid infections, Ocio de Ibiza itself ruled out opening nightclubs this summer, now that infection figures are “quite good” and over 70% of the population have been vaccinated, its manager, José Luis Benítez, is putting forward the possibility that there could be activity in October and with this contribute to extending the tourist season.

This was raised with the president of the Govern, Francina Armengol, on her last visit to the island. Benitez says that “it will not be profitable”, but stresses that it would be “a question of appearances” with the idea of conveying the message: “We’ll be back next season.

Ocio de Ibiza wants controlled dance areas to be set up where drinks would not be allowed. Although initially the association intended to admit only vaccinated people (the Balearic court ruled this out), it now proposes that, as there is right of admission, people who are not vaccinated should present a negative PCR test or take an antigen test, the cost of which should be borne by the client.
