Ibiza submits proposed law to the Govern to limit the entry of vehicles during summer

The new version of the legislative initiative foresees that the Consell can require caravans and motorhome vehicles to provide proof of a prior reservation at a tourist campground.

The Consell de Ibiza will request the Balearic Govern to process a bill to limit and establish a ceiling on the number of vehicles circulating on the island during summer. At Friday’s plenary session, the government team will approve a proposed agreement requesting the Govern to evaluate and negotiate, if necessary, with the insular institution on a specific legislative initiative (the law of environmental, economic, social and tourism sustainability of the island of Ibiza) to regulate the entry of vehicles during the summer months with the highest traffic congestion of the tourist season.

The justification of the proposed agreement that will be put to vote on Friday does not refer to the content of the draft law that has been prepared by the Consell’s legal services, but sources from the government team assure that, together with the agreement, said legislative initiative will be presented to the autonomous Executive for its processing. In other words, the Consell will ask to push the proposed law that has been drafted which is “an adaptation”, in the words of the head of the Consell’s legal services, to the one approved in February 2019 to restrict the entry of vehicles on Formentera.

In the justification of the proposal it does note that the draft legislative initiative was passed to political groups and associations “without them having submitted any suggestions”. A few days ago, this proposal was also addressed at the Consell de Diálogo Social de Ibiza.

The bill that will be passed to the Govern is the same that was presented to the media at the end of last June with a series of changes. Among other things, it further specifies the conditions for allowing the entry of caravans and motorhomes.

Specifically, it is added that, when setting the quota for this type of vehicle, the plenary session of the Consell may establish the requirement of a “previous reservation” at a tourist campground on the island for parking and overnight stay be demonstrated. This is to avoid the proliferation of motorhomes parked on the island.

Vehicle permissions

It is also added that when awarding the permits to allow entry to the island in the summer months, “the age of the vehicles” will also be taken into account. It was already foreseen in the previous version of the draft that electric or non-polluting vehicles would have priority.
