Demands for similar measures for Ibiza to the free train transport announced by Sánchez for the mainland

El Consell exige por carta al Ministerio de Transportes que se habilite «una medida análoga» para el transporte por carretera y más descuentos a residentes para viajar en avión o barco. Pimeef, CAEB y PP piden medidas fiscales

Employers, institutions and parties demand that the Government creates “an equivalent” for Ibiza to the 100% subsidized train transport that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced last Tuesday during the debate on the State of the Nation. The socialist leader informed in the lower house that from September 1st until December 31st, travel passes for the public service railroads of Cercanías, Rodalies and medium distance operated by Renfe will be free of charge. The Government will subsidize 100% of the tickets that are not individual, which includes monthly passes.

And what about for places like Ibiza and Formentera, where there is no rail network? “It is a pity that the Government of Spain has fogotten about the islands again, both Ibiza and the whole of the Balearic and Canary Islands, and only talks about commuter trains and thinking about measures that only affect the Peninsula,” criticized Javier Torres, Ibiza’s Councilor of Mobility yesterday who announced that the island institution will send “a letter to both the Balearic Govern and the Ministry of Transport and Mobility” to urge that “a similar measure is enabled for public road transport, buses, and that Ibiza is given the necessary economic resources to cover 100% of this measure. If they are going to do it on the mainland, they should also do it in the island territories,” stressed Torres, councilor for Ciudadanos.

“It is a pity that the Government of Spain is again forgetting the islands with regards to transport, both Ibiza and the whole of the Balearic and Canary Islands, and only talking about commuter trains and thinking about measures that only affect the Peninsula”

Torres is committed to “applying a similar or analogous measure” on the island to the proposal of Sánchez for the Peninsula. For example, in the case of the “half distances”, so that traveling by boat or plane to Valencia or between the Balearic Islands would also be cheaper or free until the end of the year: “If not free, then extending the discounts for residents, at least during that period. Some kind of gesture could be made by the Government. Mobility is especially sensitive for island territories. It has to be taken care of”.
