600kgs of gunpowder and color to close Ibiza’s Festes de la Terra patron saint festivities

After two years without fireworks, the 8 d'Agost show returns in style to close Festes de la Terra with the help of Pirotecnia del Mediterráneo.

The traditional fireworks of the 8 d’Agost that close the Festes de la Terra will return after two years of forced hiatus. The company Pirotecnia del Mediterraneo from Valencia, announces that it will launch 600 kilos of gunpowder, divided into 32 patterns of 12 different colors and will reach up to 180 meters high from the Wall in the port of Vila. The show will start at midnight and will last 15 minutes.

600 kilos of gunpowder, 32 patterns, 12 colors, 2,000 firing orders and calibers from 50 to 150 millimeters make up the fireworks that will be launched today at midnight from the Wall in the port of Vila and with which will conclude the Festes de la Terra. The pyrotechnic show will reach a height of 180 meters, during the 15 minutes that the show will last.

After two years without fireworks to avoid crowds during the pandemic, the main attraction of the 8 d’Agost returns to the island. The company in charge of making them happen is the Valencian company Pirotecnia del Mediterraneo, founded in 2014. “We are meeting with a very excited public. Wherever we go, we launch and people thank us by applauding a lot. It is noticeable that everyone is looking forward to the usual normality,” laughs the manager of the company, Antonio Garcia, who has been in the sector for 17 years.

The pyrotechnician explains that the show will feature a variety of effects, but the most characteristic are the cracker effect and the camuro, which is what is popularly known as the palm tree effect. In addition, homegrown, the company has the ‘Mediterranean’ “based on sounds, thunder of different calibers and whistles, with almost no color,” he details.

“The fireworks shows always have an orientation,” says Garcia. In this case, it will be the same as the Muro, so the manager advises that the best location to see them is in front. The preparation of the show on Ibiza, organized by the Consell Insular, has taken about 24 hours, with three vehicles and six workers, although the preparation in the factory was “much more laborious,” says Garcia, which took 10 days of work.
