The Da Vinci robot at the hospital performs more than 100 operations in eight months

Robotic surgery, among other things, allows patients to benefit from less complicated surgeries

The Policlรญnica Nuestra Seรฑora del Rosario has reported that the Da Vinci robot, which has been available at the hospital since May, has carried out a total of 130 operations in just eight months, according to a press release.

Regarding this fact, the surgeon of Grupo Policlรญnica Leopoldo Salvatierra has pointed out that “having robotic surgery makes it possible that, what for others is the future”, for them “is the present”.

All the interventions carried out, according to the Polyclinic, have been successful. The robot has been used by the Urology units, especially in the treatment of prostate cancer, and by the General Surgery unit for abdominal hernias, obesity or colon cancer.

Regarding the unit, the urologist of the Polyclinic Alessio Zordani highlights the “good results obtained with the Da Vinci robot in urological surgery, which also reduce the risk of side effects such as erectile dysfunction or incontinence”.

The majority of the operations performed in this area have been developed to treat the prostate cancer and kidney cancerwith radical prostatectomies or nephrectomies, but also to solve functional pathologies, such as urinary incontinence and urogynecological reconstructive techniques.

“Urology was the area that first benefited from this technology and, nowadays, almost all tumor and reconstructive pathologies can be performed with this technique,” Zordani points out. “The team already has experience, we want to keep advancing and improving. No limits should be set to what can be done through robotic surgery,” he concludes.

A “very precise” technique

Robotic surgery is a technique that makes it possible to perform certain surgical procedures in a “very precise and safe” manner and is of great help to surgeons. In the case of the Da Vinci, it is used to perform between 35-40% of surgeries performed by the General Surgery Unit, all of which are minimally invasive. In addition, the technology allows patients to have “fewer complications and recover much fasterwith shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to daily activities,” the Polyclinic continued in a note.

Among the advantages of using this technology is that it allows for a greater range of motion for the surgeon and with it, the possibility to perform much more precise dissections in a reduced space. In addition, the robot increases the ability to assess the vitality of the manipulated tissues and the limits of dissection of malignant lesions, thanks to the incorporated fluorescence technology, the release continues.
