The Algerian family made up of Feriel Leroul (23 years old, mother), Aissa Sabre (27 years old, father) and the two and a half year old son Amjed Leroul left on 5th October on board a small boat from the north of Algeria with an uncertain course, with the aim of reaching the Spanish coast, in this case Formentera, in the Balearic Islands. Oussama Bouhraoua, a 20 year old sealover, was travelling on the same skiff, and on this trip he decided to put on his wetsuit in the face of the foreseeable inclement weather. Their families are convinced that the two bodies found in Formentera last month belong to Feriel and Oussama.
On 20th October the remains of a body in an advanced state of decomposition arrived on the south coast of Formentera, at s’Estufador, according to official sources. These remains were confirmed a few days later as those of a woman. On October 24th, while a kite foil tournament was being held between ses Illetes and s’Estufador, in Formentera, the GEAS of the Guardia Civil had to recover a corpse sheathed in a neoprene wetsuit in s’Espalmador.
To establish a direct link between these missing persons and the human remains found in Formentera is what the families of these people are looking for. The identification of the bodies goes through a long administrative protocol that requires the relatives to send DNA tests through the Spanish Consulate in Algeria so that the national authorities can certify the identity. This process generates uncertainty among the relatives, who always believe the worst possible outcome.
At the same time alarm bells went off in the north of Algeria. The Bouhraoua family contacted Diario de Ibiza to explain the situation they are going through and to convey their concern. The spokesperson for the family is the young man’s sister, Khadidja, who is also in contact with the family of the missing couple. During the telephone conversation, the voice of his father, Mourad Bouhraoua, and his mother, Fatiha Dahbi, are heard saying that they have no information and that they are looking for her. The mother of the missing young man states: “I just want to know if my son is alive or dead, one month and ten days ago my child left home and I haven’t heard from him”. This anguished mother asks for help to put an end to her uncertainty, which, according to her, prevents her from “sleeping or living”.
