Formentera attracted 34,617 people in one day in August, the same number as in 2019

The human pressure index reveals that last August, specifically on the 12th, Formentera peaked with an influx of 34.617 people on the island, a figure almost similar to that reached in the same month of 2019 (34,720), before the covid pandemic

Two years ago, the peak of human pressure was only 0.3% above this summer’s figure, which shows the level of tourist activity last summer in Formentera despite the effects of the health crisis.

With a population of 11,904 people, according to the latest official data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), in August this year the influx of tourists almost tripled the number of residents of Formentera.

Neither Ibiza nor the rest of the islands of the Balearic archipelago have experienced a similar situation. Precisely, Ibiza saw a greater drop in maximum human pressure in August with respect to the same month of the summer prior to covid, with a decrease of 13.5%. The average decrease recorded in the Balearic Islands stands at 10.7%, while in Mallorca reaches 11.8% and Menorca, 5.7%, according to data from the Statistical Institute of the Balearic Islands (Ibestat). This index estimates the load borne by each island in a given period and is calculated on the basis of passenger arrivals and departures at airports and ports under state and regional jurisdiction, to which estimates of the current population and short-term projections are added.

In the case of Ibiza, the maximum number of people on the island this year was also reached on 12th August, with a total of 288,909, 13.5% less, as noted above, compared to the figure recorded in the summer of 2019 (334,243). With respect to August last year, five months after the pandemic began and when, after the start of a new wave of contagions, the closure of the tourist season was brought forward, the indicator of human pressure has risen in 2021 by almost 15%. Thus, in August last year a maximum human influx of 251,510 people was recorded in Ibiza. The population of Ibiza, according to the latest official data from the INE, stands at 151,827 residents.
